With over 300 masonry arches strengthened using the much acclaimed MARS system, 2021 marks a milestone in the success of this innovation.
When the MARS System was developed in the late 1990s after a successful regime of testing at the TRL, it was granted the Design Council’s Millennium Award for Innovation after the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair, had challenged businesses to demonstrate that Britain is the creative powerhouse of the world. Our System also featured on the Spiral of Innovation at the Millennium Dome, as ‘the very best in British ingenuity’.
The MARS System was originally developed by SSP Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers (SSP) which has evolved through a number of incarnations to the present-day company, Goldhawk Bridge Restoration Ltd. However, two directors of Goldhawk, Brian Boughton and Bob Falconer, who have been responsible for the innovation, have been involved from the beginning.
